City Chess Players' rankings 2010

The provisional English chess rankings list for the 2010-11 season has just been published by the English Chess Federation. There may be minor changes if errors have to be corrected and because one or two event organisers have yet to send in their results for grading.

Explanation of Tabulated Data

Eligibility for Grading. Congress, tournament and league organisers are responsible for sending the results of games to a grader. Results of games in Worcestershire events are received by Derek Digger the county grading officer. The grading officer then enters the data into a database which is sent to the national grader who is responsible with the grading team for compiling the national grading list, which is published at the end of July. Most players and captains prefer to access this data from the on-line database, but a hard copy can also be purchased from the English Chess Federation. For further information on grading in England go to the ECF grading site

Categories. Grades are more reliable if a player has many graded games in the previous season. Category A players have played 30 or more graded games in the last season. category B players have played 30 or more graded games in the last two seasons and 20 or more in the last season. Category C players have played 30 or more graded games in the last three seasons and more than 10 in the last season. Category D players have played 15 or more graded games in the last three seasons and at least 1 in the last season. Category E players have played 9 or more graded games in the last three seasons and at least 1 in the last season. A dash in this column indicates that a player has insufficient graded games to be in any of these categories.

Standard play games have a time-control longer than 60 minutes for the whole game. Games in the club's Knock-Out Tournament, and the All-play-all Tournament are graded as standard play games as are games in the Worcester & District League and all games in Divisions 1 and 2 of the Worcestershire County League.

Rapid play games are games completed in less than 60 minutes. Results of games in the the club's Rapidplay Tournament are sent for grading.
