How Worcestershire's 2009 Megafinal Winners
got on in the National Gigafinal

Congratulations to Leo Tsoi who showed himself to be the best under-11 boy at the tournament taking the Ultimo title without losing a game. He is invited to the Terafinal to be held in August.

Worcestershire players who only just missed out on Ultimo titles and who are invited to the Terafinal Challengers are: Joseph Friar (Placed 2nd in the under-10 boys); Sofia Emanuel (Placed 3rd in the Under-17 Girls); Kaiser Malik and Chris Smith (placed 2nd equal in the Under-17 Boys); and Dani Malik (placed 2nd in the Under-18 Boys) all from Tony Miles Checkmates, Quinton, Birmingham.

The Worcestershire Megafinal organisers were very pleased to see that so many of the Gigafinal qualifiers from Worcestershire were able to play in the National Gigafinal at Failsworth, Oldham on 16 or 17 July. In the Gigafinals they played the very best chess players of their age in the UK and gaining at least 1 point is a real achievement in such elite company.

What they did next

Chris Smith won first prize playing in the Worcestershire Open Congress at Catshill, Bromsgrove in the Major Tournament. Several other juniors also did well against adults at Catshill including a 13 year old from Leicestershire! who not only beat the Worcestershire Megafinal Organiser but also won third prize in the Open Tournament. If you are over 12 and scored 4 or more at the Worcestershire Megafinal, you are ready to take on seasoned adult players and win!

Dani Malik represented England scoring two draws in the annual Glorney Cup competition hosted this year by Scotland and played in Glasgow. Ireland on 6.5 points won and England 2nd on 5 points.

Leo Tsoi played in the British Under-11Championships at Paignton and scored 3 out of 7.
