Stewart was unable to provoke a weakness to attack and Brian eventually broke out of defence and equalised the position. Ian Clarke chose a variation which led to an early exchange of Queens on board two. Black had structural problems on the Queen's side but Ian had difficulties developing his King side. Black left his King in the centre, and this lost him a piece and the game when his bishop became trapped. John Knee had to face a strong Panov attack against his usual Caro-Kann defence on board three. His opponent had a chance to win a pawn but chose to build up a King-side attack with his major pieces. However a well-timed pawn advance blunted the attack, and, with both players running into time-trouble, a draw was agreed. A Ruy Lopez opening on board four led to a long period of manoeuvring behind pawn lines with both players attempting to find the optimum moment to open the position. Eventually, Don Curry delayed recapturing a pawn in order to advance his own pawn to a threatening position. This allowed Geoffrey Herbert to take another pawn with his queen's rook and gain time by attacking the black queen. He was able to win two more pawns, and the resulting 4 pawn advantage was sufficient to secure victory. Peter Yeadon obtained pressure on the Queen Bishop file in a tense struggle on board five. An ending was reached where his bishop was able to defend the position against white's central knight. A draw was eventually agreed. Black played a French Defence on board six which resulted in an early central pawn push by Tony Shaw. Black came out of the opening better and, due to an error by white, gained the exchange.
