Match report from Jim Friar. In a close match the league champions, Malvern, took on newly promoted Hagley. The first game to finish was board 1. From a cramped position arising from a Bishops opening and transposing into a Vienna Game, Brian Turner manoeuvred to swap-off and equalise the position and a draw followed. Andrew Moore played the Tartakower System. It led to a game where both sides had chances, although Andrew did have a small spatial advantage. The board 3 game rapidly reached an ending with a queen against two rooks. Unfortunately Geoffrey Herbert had created an advanced passed c-pawn and Francis O'Gorman had to sacrifice a rook for it. Board 4 saw a Queen's Gambit Declined. Kyle Reid sacrificed the exchange, but John Knee defended expertly. Eventually, Kyle's unsupported pawns felll as John's king became active. Board 5 saw Hagley's only win: a Four Knights Ruy Lopez where James Friar won pawns in the middle-game complications. When all the pieces came off he comfortably queened his h-pawn. On bottom board, Joseph Friar battered Barry Stone with a Scotch Gambit. Barry survived the onslaught till the ending and kept the pawn. At one stage the young Hagley player had 20 moves to make in 2 minutes, which he did without breaking sweat. By the end Joseph had sewn the position up so tightly that Barry could make no progress.

Match report from Jim Friar.
Hagley scored their first match points in the top division, beating Halesowen convincingly away. Board 4 was the first to finish after losing a pawn in the middlegame. John Asbury won a pawn in the middle game and swapped off all the pieces to get a won king and pawn ending. On board 2 Andy defended a Queen's Gambit Declined. The action bounced from the king to the queen's side where Andy Mooren neutralised Mike Hadley's attack. The resulting double rook ending was drawn. The four remaining games were all very sharp with tricks and traps ready to be unleashed on the unwary. On board 3, James Friar doubled Don Curry's c-pawns. A melee followed as James tried to exploit this weakness. Don switched his attack to the king side, but missed a mating threat that also attacked his rook. Mike Friar played an unorthodox attack against Rob Grimes' Dragon Variation. It was impossible to assess who was winning, soon Mike was a full rook up. For a long time Graham Wyle was under intense pressure and he defended exceptionally well. Graham Wyle's backward d-pawn was weak, but he won the exchange. From then on it was a matter of technique in spite of John Llewelyn's pawn mass. With all the games finished, the players on Borad 1 agreed a a draw in a rook and opposite coloured bishops ending. Both had a passed pawn but neither could advance.

Match report from Ray Collett. The first blow was struck by Worcester. Andy Moore (Hagley) played an inferior variation of the Scandanavian Defence and ran into the Worcester player's detailed opening preparation. Peter Kitson duly bagged the point after only twenty odd moves had been played. On board 6, Jim Keene (Worcester) was second to victory capitalising on an bad error. On board 4, Ed Osbourn (Worcester City) won in a complex middlegame. James Friar (Hagley) was the first Hagley player to score when his experienced opponent, Nick Harris (Worcester) accepted a draw with relief. Board 5 looked to be heading for a draw with an interlocked pawn chain stretching across the board. Ray Collett (Worcester) had advantage of space and good versus bad bishop. as soon as Collett opened up the queen side he crashed through on the a-file and won his opponent's queen for a rook. The last game to complete was top board. Jim Friar (Hagley) achieved a clear advantage against Steve Mellor's Caro-Kan. With supported advanced passed pawn advancing towards promotion, Jim Frair won on time. [Names of Hagely boards 5 and 6 transposed in the original report and corrected 19 July after consultation with Hagley captain.]

Match reported by Frank Pickett and report from Brian Turner. With this away win over Malvern, the Championship defenders, Kidderminster have thrown the competition wide open. Brian Turner writes: "Malvern Chess Club faltered in their campaign to retain the County League Division 1 title, losing 4:2 at home to an experienced Kidderminster side. In truth, Malvern were fortunate not to lose by a greater margin. Malvern captain Geoffrey Herbert and John Knee both got promising positions with white, but were unable to convert them to wins. Brian Turner on board 1 had a lost position by move 12 but managed to create sufficient confusion to draw. Ian Clarke was a piece down, but his resilience in desparate time trouble induced an error from his opponent to scramble a draw. Max Wong and Barry Stone each put up a strong fight, but were defeated by strong Kidderminster players on the lower boards."

Match report from Andrew Moore. In a match between the division's bottom two clubs and local rivals, it was set for a classic and this match will certainly be remembered. Kidderminster were 1-0 down after just three minutes. Top board was the next to finish on a draw. Andrew Moore (Hagley) then beat John Close (Kidderminster) when a sacrificial attack faltered. Kidderminster then got one back when Joe Friar had to resign to John Chester rather than lose his queen for a rook. The remaining two games were drawn as both Hagley players gave their opponents nothing to exploit.

Match report from Ray Collett. Malvern were outgraded on the lower boards and Jim Keene (Worcester) soon had an advantage. The first shock result was an early win for Steve Mellor (Worcester) after an error by Malvern's top board. Ray Collett (Worcester) achieved a very satisfactory position for black against a quiet Ruy Lopez, but seemed not to be making progress as players approached the time control. Both players had to make thier moves fairly quickly but Ray's oponent misjudged his time and lost on time in a perfectly equal position. At the end of the playing session, the games on boards 2 and 4 were still in play, but Kitson and Herbert agreed one after sleeping on the position when it became apparent that Geoffrey had a forced draw. The board 4 game was adjourned with a rook and pawn ending where Ed Osbourn (Worcester) is a pawn up and he forced a win in the second session easily. (Board 4 commentary corrected 19 Dec)

Match report from Jim Friar. In the return match between these two clubs, Hagley substituted Francis O'Gorman for James Friar who was ill. Francis secured his point when he pinned his opponent's queen to his king along with threats of winning a rook. The next result was on board 4 where Mike Friar (Hagley) offered his knight to win a pawn, but Jon Asbury (Halesowen) came up with a brilliant queen counter sacrifice. After the compications, there was a drawn king and pawn ending. Kyle Reed (Hagley) played agressively and exploited Bob Grimes' early queen manoevres to trap her in the centre of the board. The game continued for a while, but it was a lost cause. On board 2, Andy Moore (Hagley) offered a draw which his opponent declined because of the state of the match. The Hagley player infiltrated his rooks on to the back row and in complications his adversary overstepped the time control. On bottom board, John Llewelyn (Halesowen) won a piece, but later on Joseph Friar (Hagley) found a bishop sacrifice that won the piece back and and set up an unstoppable attack. The top board was the last to finish and near the end there was king and five pawns each, but neither players had much time. Stewart Fishburne (Halesowen) had an active king and a pawn majority on the queen-side that proved decisive.

Match report from Ray Collett. This was a hard fought match. On top board, the game was poised with minor pieces and queens and equal material at the end of the session. Although the Worcester player thought he had winning chances, a draw was agreed a few days after the match. First game to finish was board 5 and then Andrew farthing, Worcester, celebrated his return to the team with a win against his young opponent. On board 3, Ray Collett, Worcester, came off worse in the middle game playing against a Scandinavian defence. Players castled on opposite wings, but the Worcester player forced a series of exchanges that neutralised a threatened attack on his king. Ian Clarke was moving quickly to reach the time control in the rook and pawn ending, when he blundered, but the Worcester player failed to see winning pawn sacrifice to force a won king and pawn ending. A draw was reached by repetition.

  Result 3½ - 2½ Played  4 February
Match report from Ray Collett. A crucial match in the league season. By beating leaders Worcester, Hagley have made the championship a fight to the end. Hagley struck first when Jim Friar, playing the black side of a Ruy Lopez, got an early win against Steve Mellor. On board 6, the players agreed a draw after two hours play. At this stage Worcester appeared to have an advantage on boards 2 and 3, but their board 4's position was looking lost and on board 5 players were hardly out of the opening. Ed Osbourne (Worcester) soon had a winning attack on board 3, board 6 was agreed drawn, and young Joseph Friar (Hagley) was about to administer the last rights to his opponent's position. Ed and Joseph soon converted leaving the match hanging on the result of the Moore - Kitson game. Andrew Moore (Hagley) had sacrificed a minor piece for two pawns and good outposts for his knights. Peter had to return the sacrificed piece and found he had a poor position. Both players were slightly short of time and Andrew offered a draw to win the match for Hagley. The offer was immediately accepted, which was just as well for Worcester as the Hagley player had a forced win of material, which neither player had noticed when the draw was offered. Match report from Ray Collett. Worcester City's bad run of form continued and chances of the title are slipping. Two of City's best players were missing and from the start this match went badly from them. Clive billinge (Kidderminster) scored first on borad 6. Next to finish were Andrew Farthing John Chester who agreed a draw only just out of the opening. City's boards 3 and 4 were also under great pressure. Mark Riley (Kidderminster) had a strong attack and Ray Collett (Worcester) was defending a lifeless position where Kidderminster player, Frank Pickett, had lined his queen and major pieces to attack Ray's king. Ed Osbourn (Worcester) had a promising position, but was very short of time. When that game was drawn, Frank Pickett offered a relieved Ray a draw to decide the match. At the end of the session, Peter Kitson (Worcester) was the exchange and pawn up in a blocked bishop and rook ending. 16 March it was reported that John Wrench had conceded his game to Peter Kitson.

Match report from Ray Collett. After the Worcester captain's fears that he would not have a competitive side, both Nick Harris and Steve Mellor were available for this match. The first game to finish was board 6 when John Llewelyn (Halesowen) developed a powerful position and then saw a nice move to take a pawn that was defended only by another pinned pawn. The end thereafter was swift. Worcester's board one's lack of form continued when Stewart Fishburne' Modern Defence overran Steve Mellor's position. Worcester's boards two and three had advantagous positions but not quite enough to force wins. The last game to finish was Ray Colletts' win. Both sides moved patiently behind a locked central pawn chain. At the end, the Halesowen player's pieces were tied so much that there was no defence to a re-routing of Ray's queen to the opposite side of the board to force mate or ruinous loss of material.

Match report from Ray Collett. This was the crunch match. If Worcester lost or drew, Hagley would be league champions. City had to win this match to gain a title that looked theirs for certain until the February. First to decisive point was scored by Nick Harris (Worcester). In this ragged game, Frank Pickett had snatched Nick's a1 rook with his knight. there were unbalanced forces, and both players' kings were exposed in the centre of the board. Nick used his queen and an advanced knight to force the win. Second game to finish was board 5. John Gittus (Kidderminster), playing a Scandinavian Defence, offered a draw Ray Collett (Worcester) as players were about to swap off the rooks to enter a knight and pawn ending. Shortly after, Clive Billinge (Kidderminster) and Andrew Farthing (Worcester) agreed a draw to a game that always looked drawn. On the remaining boards, Worcester players were pressing advantages on boards 1 and 2, and on board 4 the position was complex and level until Ed found a clever tactic to win. Peter Kitson (Worcester) had two giant bishops and advantage on time and his opponent had to resign when faced with a back rank mate. To crown Worcester's triumph, Steve Mellor celebrated a return to form with a smart queen sacrifice to force mate on board 1.

Match report from Ken Durnell. Young Igor Shevenko, who only recently joined the Kidderminster Club and was playing his first competitive match game, put up a spirited fight against a more experienced opponent. Congratulations to Droitwich's team on achieving victory despite having to default on bottom board.

Match report from Glenn Cox. What a difference a fortnight makes! Compared with the previous Headless Cross - Greenlands match Greenlands brought a slightly stronger side and Headless Cross were slightly weaker. Hence a reversal of the earlier result. This result puts paid to Headless Cross's faint hope of challenging Redditch for the title.
