2011-12 SeasonWarley Quinborne are League champions!Division 2 was won by Halesowen and Division 3 by Birmingham Checkmates.. David was a long-serving player for Warley Quinborne. 7 May. Joseph Friar (Hagley) was placed 27-31st in the World Schools Championship Under-15 Open in Iasi, Romania on 4 points from 9 games. After an unrewarding start, he showed true grit to win two games in succession and finished mid-table. 9 April, Birmingham Checkmates storm to 3rd Division title. Alex Holowczak reports. Division 3 was decided in an exciting match.Junior side Birmingham Checkmates tore through their opponents like a tornado. Completing their fixtures on 5 April, they ended the season with a clean sweep. The team conceded only 4½ game points during the whole season and only two games. The only team to offer significant resistance to the Checkmates was Kynoch. Details in the match link from the Div 3 page. 17 Feb. West Midlands Medley beat Bloxwich Juniors 14-3. Organiser Ray Dolan and Controller Peter Broomhall thank players from Wolverhampton, Brewood, Mercia, and Walsall Kipping clubs in the league. 6-7 Oct. Pavel Besedin wins Open at Dudley Chess Congress. 28 Sep. Derek Digger loses fight against cancer. The death of former Worcestershire Grading Officer and player for county, Kidderminster and Halesowen teams has been announced. Derek was resolute and positive to the end. A doughty opponent over-the-board and faithful servant to a wide chess community that includes clubs in three counties through grading for the Worcester & District and Dudley and District Leagues, he is much missed. I know players' thoughts will be with his family.
