Match report from Paul Walters. Paul reports that it "felt a bit strange as I'd been away for so long" awating the birth of his baby daughter on 20 September. "I played well gained a great position but didn't capitalise on it. A poor move by me allowed Paul to equalise". A race to promote a pawn to a queen led to my opponent moving a pawn to c1, but placed my white queen on the queening square. This stunned me for a moment and I was tempted to move my new queen. We both realised the error and a black queen replaced the white on. "I gained my white queen on a8 a move later. The drawish position started to shift toward black and I eventually lost. I hope my opponent won't me mentioning he wrote "I was lucky!" on the top of the scoresheet. I did agree. Paul Evans played very well and became stronger under pressure when I played a bit too quickly and less accurately as weariness set in. Playing fast in endgames is not wise especially when you have an abundance of time on your clock. The moral of the story a good position isn't a win unless you make it happen". |

Alex Holowczak reports. The score was 1½ - 1½ with board 1 still to finish. Warley had worked out from the tie-break rules that were Matthew to draw, a Halesowen 2½ - 1½ win would secure a play-off between the two teams. A Halesowen 3-1 win or better would win them the league. Warley would have been pretty miffed if this match result and Mutual Circle's default against Halesowen gave the league win to Halesowen; but that never happened. Curry had a massive time advantage at about move 40, but somehow managed to get a worse position. Furgusson rattled off about 15 moves in 5 minutes, and had an overwhelmingly position by the time Curry's flag fell. |

Report from David Blower. Board 1 was a fairly even game all the way through and was the last game to finish, the draw agreed with the result already decided in Brewoods favour. On board 2 with white, David Blower opened with the Four Knights Game: Scotch Variation and was a pawn up in the middle of the game. The end game was unusual as the knights were still on the board. Eventually, Rees exchanged his knight for a passed pawn, but a draw was agreed to guaranteed Brewood's victory. Mark Binfield played Sicilian Defence with an unusual and likely unsound variation. His young opponent took full advantage and was only a move away from a forced win after the opening, but Mark castled queenside and escape the trap. James Draper left a bishop unguarded and then Mark Binfield took advantage with double rooks on the h-file. Well played to young James; this is likely to be a one and only win over this youngster for Mark! The battle between juniors on Board 4 transposed into a Three Knights Game with a sort of inverted Ruy Lopez. Danny left a couple of pawns en prise and after the queens were swapped off, entered the endgame in a desperate position. However the Brewood player generated a passed pawn and found an excellent move with his rook to force Cameron to trade it for the promoted pawn. Danny's recent practice with the rook-and-king matesallowed him to wrap up the game. |

Report from David Blower. On board 2, David Buckley and Maureen Clark drew when both players had a pawn and and rook each. Analysis showed the position was dead drawn. On board 3, Andrew Davies also got a draw. The material was even, although the John Southcote felt he had a slightly better pawn structure. With all the rest of the games draws, Brewood's David Blower got a victory to secure the match. In a Three Knights Opening, David made a mistake on move 10 leaving his central e-pawn en prise but, Joyce Evans did not take it. Shortly after, players exchanged three minor pieces. This led to a classic knight v bishop game with David having the knight. At first David manoevred his knight, looking for a gap in the defences. Meanwhile Joyce used her bishop to control a key diagional from long range. Until Joyce blundered her rook in exchange for David's remaining knight, the game had been very even. Soon David had also forked Joyce's bishop, and got a rook on the 7th rank. The final mating position made the game appear less balanced than it was, showing nce you have a material advantage, it becomes easier to get an even bigger one. |

Report from David Blower. On board 1, Steve Micklewright gained a pawn late on in the game and it turned into an overwhelming advantage. With several passed pawns and one of them about to queen, Steve's opponent resigned. On board 2: David Blower's unbeaten Dudley League record came undone right at the end of the season. David played a Queen's Pawn, Chigorin Variation as black. David exchanged his bishop for John Pakenham's knight, doubling pawns and producing an open-g file, but David couldn't move his pieces to exploit it. John won the excahnge with a skewer. With the queens still on the board and an open file, David played on in the hope of a perpetual check, but it was not to be after the exchange of queens. At this point Peter had two rooks against rook and bishop and used them to force a pawn to the 7th rank when David had to sacrifice his own rook to stop the pawn and resigned, setting up the tense finish later on in the evening. Mark Binfield's game was the last to finish. Mark already knew that it was all down to him to deliever us the league title. No pressure then Mark - apart from the whole room watching! The whole season had come down to the last fifteen minutes of the last game in the last match. After a neat combination Mark set up a skewer: a rook check to take his opponents queen. Peter moved his king out of check and all Mark had to do was take the queen, but Mark took what seemed like years to do a simple move. Eventually he took the queen. All the spectators' body language was fascinating to watch. A sigh of relief after a move, or a nod of the head, as we were all saying (to ourselves) what moves Mark should be making. Mark then took the knight, but the tension in the still didn't loosen. Mark had not advanced any of his pawns in front of the king, and there was still the possibility of a back rank mate. Everyone in the room could see it, but could Mark? Yes! He exchanged his queen for his opponent's rook. With no possible threats left, Peter resigned. All things considered Mark played very well given the match and league situation. On board 4 Danny Binfield will be disappointed with his defeat. He fell for a pawn fork of knight and bishop. It started with Danny taking Peter Kearns's knight in exchange for a pawn. This led to Danny's bishop and knight being on the 4th rank and two files apart. Peter moved his pawn forward two squares forking both pieces with the pawn defended by another pawn diagionally behind. Dan counter-attacked, but it didn't work and he ended up losing his knight. Overall both players had lost knights, but Danny was now a pawn down. Peter used his experience and material advantage to trade pieces. No matter what Danny wanted to do, he was forced into them. Eventually Peter took advantage of an open file with his queen and rook to checkmate. |
