Match reported by Communigate. Redditch finally have broken their knock out duck. This is the first season in a long while that Redditch Raiders have managed to secure a place in Round Two. Droitwich played a very close game winning on board 1 and drawing on the three remaining boards. Phil Church was lucky to hold his game to draw having lost a piece very early on in the opening. Redditch go through on the 1.5 point handicap rule

Played 28 January |
Match reported by Communigate. Last year's beaten finalists Kidderminster Knights are through to round 2 of the Worcester & District Knockout Competition after a hard fought match against Kidderminster Rooks. On board 1 Jim Friar gave up the exchange. This may appear ironic in a 'Knights v Rooks' match almost as if he was trying to prove a point. Jim had some compensation and emerged with a central passed pawn in the ending but after more pieces were exchanged Jim was relieved when Paul Thomas agreed to the draw. On board 2, John Wrench established a passed pawn and two bishops against two knights. Ken Durnell battled well but faced a lost end game. Maurice Bissell and Bill Pugh also had a close match but Maurice played the ending well and exploited Bill's doubled pawns. Terry Pountney got some counter play after being two pawns down but Dave Close was determined to press home his advantage, and after winning a third pawn Terry resigned.

Played 7 July 2003 at Droitwich |
From Ray Collett's records. On board 1, Eric Myers played a Veresov and when the draw was a greed had good compensation for a pawn. Ray Collett was gifted a piece and won. Jim Keeen played the Four Pawns Attack against Ian Clarke's King's Indian Defence. White stripped the black king of his defending pawns and won. On Board 4, a Queen's Gambit Declined led to an isolated queen's pawn in a balanced position, subsequently drawn.
