| Reported on Communigate. After failing to win in their opening two fixtures, Kidderminster Knight's scored a win at Droitwich. On board 1 Knight's Captain John Wrench threw away a 2 pawn advantage against Peter Kitson for the second year running only managing to draw after; 1. e4 e5, 2. Nc3 Nc6, 3. Bc4 Nf6, 4. d3 d6, 5. f4 Bg4, 6. Nf3 Nd4, 7. 0-0 c6, 8. Kh1 Be7, 9. fxe5 dxe5, 10. Bxf7+ Kxf7, 11. Nxe5+ Kg8 (Ke8 was better) 12. Nxg4 Nxg4, 13. Qxg4 h5, (White should now have played Qd1 and settled for the 2 Pawn advantage but John continued with 14. Qg6 (giving back a Pawn but keeping the attack and hoping for ..Nxc2, Qf7+ followed by Rf5!) 14.... Qe8, 15. Qg3 Nxc2, 16. Rb1..... black mounted pressure on the d pawn and a draw was agreed a few moves later.. (15. Qxe8+ fails to save the 'C' Pawn after ... Rxe8, 16. Rf2 Rf8). On board 2, Jim Friar was under pressure after castling king side with a fianchettoed bishop when the h-pawns were exchanged. Jim, however, found a defence. Frank Pickett won a piece for 2 pawns in a Centre Counter Opening on board 3 and eventually his material advantage allowed him to force the win. John Gittus played well and scored a win on his debut for the Knight's playing the Grob opening with black. (1. d4 h6, 2. b3 g5). John won a pawn and reached an advantageous endgame and converted. | |||
