Match report by Ray Collett. Both teams were weakened by absences because top players were working away from home. Top board finished first. Paul Thomas (Kidderminster) played a French Defence, but weakened his king side and Ray Collett infiltrated a bishop to f6 and Paul found there was no way to stop the queen getting to g7 and mating. Board 2 arrived at an interesting middle game where Andrew Farthing (Worcester) won a queen side pawn, but Mike Kitchen (Kidderminster) had plenty of compensation and a draw was agreed. Terry Pountney (Kidderminster) played a Queen's Pawn Game on board 4. John Clarke won a pawn and went into a bishop and pawn ending a pawn up, but was unable to convert to a full point. Board 3 was the last to finish. This game saw a Scandanavian Defence. Ed Osbourn (Worcester) gradually increased control of the board and broke through with an attack on black's king. |
