Match report from Andrew Farthing. On top board, the Pawns received a headstart when black overlooked a tactical motif on move 6 and found himself two pawns down and unable to castle. After this, the result of the game was never in doubt. A win on Board 3 left the Pawns needing just a draw to secure victory, which duly arrived in the form of a well-contested game on bottom board. The final game was something of a rollercoaster: In a Dutch Defence, Richard Turner soon won a pawn and had a very strong position, probably winning. However, Richard allowed a knight fork of queen and rook, dropping the exchange. John Clark had the upper hand at this point, but Richard managed to secure a monster of a knight on e5, which gave him plenty of compensation. At the time peace was agreed, the side with the material deficit was, if anything, a little better.Name of Reddich's board 4 corrected 21 Oct. |

Match report from Ray Collett. With a strong side, Worcester were tipped to win, but the match was not without wobbles because Worcester's Board 1 arrived late. Board 4 was first to finish and gave Worcester's first point. Andrew Farthing also put in a solid win. Board 3 went the distance with first one side and then the other having the advantage. In the end a draw was agreed in a queen and pawn ending. On board 1 after resisting some middle game pressure, Ray Collett got some advantage and offered the draw to seal the match. |

Match report from Glenn Cox. Ashley Davis' Sicilian Defence was overcome by Arnold Kirkland's Grand Prix Attack. Arnold conducted the game with commendable vigour and took a valuable scalp. On board 2 Bert Foord (Droitwich) played an unusual variation of the French Defence which Glenn Cox treated with excessive suspicion. Eventually, Glenn's heavy pieces lined up on the open king's file and netted a piece. Board 3 saw an interesting struggle which was decided when Dave Richardson (Headless Cross) played a nice combination involving a long range pin. Unfortunately Droitwich were unable to field a board 4 to leave Headless Cross with 2 match points from their first match. |

Match report from Glenn Cox. On board 3, Terry Radford (Headless Cross) found himself two pieces down after some hectic early exchanges, but played on and in later central complications managed to win back a piece plus a rook. Faced with this setback Michael (I think!) Reitenbach resigned. Board 1 saw a meeting of two young rivals, but the result was an early draw. Graham Wyle stepped in to play on board 2 at the last minute for Hagley, but lost the exchange from a loose knight foray. The game remained tense but was decided when Graham lost a further piece to a Zwischenzug. On board 4, Mark Hore won a piece early in the game. The end came when Bill Sitch unwisely advanced his king into enemy territory and fell into a mating net. |

Match reported by Ray Collett. On board 2, Terry conceeded doubled pawns in a Scotch Game, but his bishops were active. Andrew farthing blundered a pawn, but he had a solid defence and drew. Mike Kitchen lost a piece in the early middle game and Roger soon scored a win. Phil Smith developed an initiative against Ken Durnell and players were soon in an ending with Phil a pawn up, but he was not able to convert. On board 1, Ray Collett played a Kings Indian Defence and players rattled off moves of the main line. Paul Thomas did not choose active play on the queenside and his opponent soon developed a bind on the king side. The Worcester player, who has been held to draws in league games so far this season, found a forceful finish. Can you see black's winning move? |

Match report from Michele Clack. A good win for Mark Robinson (Redditch) and a prime example of why one should go through one's games. Mark felt that he had lost the game in the opening last week and spent some time studying the line. He couldn't believe his luck when he got the chance to play the same line again this week. This time he played the opening well and got an enduring advantage and the point.

Match report from Glenn Cox. Kidderminster took an early 2-0 lead, winning on boards 3 & 4, but Headless Cross hit back to square the match. Their players won on the top two boards. Both these games were both decided on time, but the winning players could both claim to have favourable positions anyway. |

Match report from Glenn Cox. This was a hard-fought match, and at one point a different result seemed likely. The games finished in board order, starting at the top. On board 1, Dave Close (Kidderminster) left a rook en prise after having had a clear advantage and declining his opponent's offer of a draw. On board 2, Ashley Davis (Headless Cross) won a pawn in the middle-game and converted successfully. On 3, Terry Radford clinched the match for Headless Cross by agreeing his first draw of the season after 12 decisive games in the leagues. Finally, Mark Hore (Headless Cross) fought to the bitter end despite a large material deficit, and resigned only when it became clear that Terry Pountney was not going to allow stalemate. |

Match report from Ray Collett. The first game to finish was board 1. It was a natural conclusion to an game that looked equal throughout. Glenn Cox (Headless Cross) gained an early piece and converted after rearguard resistance. Board three approached the time control in a blanced position and players agreed a draw. Roger Yates, Worcester Pawn's captain, obtained a massive central attack driving a wedge between black's queen's and king's sides and won a piece around move 30 and duly converted. |

Match report from Ray Collett. The drawn game on board 1 featured a a sharp attack on the Worcester player's king. In the ensuing complications I thought that Ian Clack (Redditch) had over-extended his forces and faced the loss of a piece, but clever tactics kept the draw in hand. Phil Smith (Worcester) and Richard Turner (Redditch) played solidly and the late middle game position was dead drawn. The board 4 game was similar and the result was agreed early. The only decisive game on board 3 gave Pawn's captain Roger Yates the win to claim the match. The game started as a Sicilain Defence, and both players were behind closed lines in the middle game. Roger Yates got advantage in position and then won material. |
