Corrected 19 Oct - I had transposed each of ther results of decisive games, but at least that demonstrates impartiality in my mistakes! Match result from Roger Yates report by Ray Collett. The match started dramatically with an early win by Kidderminster's new player Alan Preece against Worcester's captain. The score was equalised for Worcester by Phil Smith leaving the two top boards in play. On board 2, Andrew Farthing had an advantage in locked position while on board 1, John Chester had emerged from his Sicilian Defence with an ideal middlegame. On top board, Ray Collett played dangerously to loosen the position and his opponent got behind with time. In the moves leading up to the first time control John miscalculated and allowed Ray Collett to win his queen. By this stage board 2 looked drawn with completely locked central pawns and bishops 'biting on granite'. Andrew Farthing played on trying to convert his advantage in space. As players approaced the final time control and were moving quickly I thought Andrew had walked into a mate, but cool-headedly he demonstrated a bishop sacrifice left the game still completely drawn.
