Match reported by Ray Collett. Worcester took a strong team to this match and Hagley were without Andrew Moore, convalescing from an illness. David L Roberts won in short order and after an hour's play, board 2 looked equal, Rob Sutton was squeezing Tony West back and Jamie Dennison had won a piece. An unforced error gifted Ray Collett a bishop as the game was beginning to turn in his favour. Although Michael Reitenbach fought doggedly he conceded when it was clear his opponent could queen a pawn. Shortly after board 2 had concluded, Rob Sutton's attack bore fruit. Roger Yates played on and Jamie demonstrated a king and rook mate against the Yates' king.

Match result reported by Roger Yates. Ray Collett writes: After an hour's play, Worcester looked very comfortable on boards 1, 3 and 4, while on board 2, the players were poised to enter a melee attacking kings on opposite sides of the board. Both players, however, got cold feet and when the Droitwich player offered a draw it was accepted. Meanwhile on board 4, Roger Yates was ahead on material and pushing connected passed pawns. Then, out of the blue Arnold Kirkland was gifted a pawn and at least the exchange from a blunder and Droitwich were ahead. Roger Yates mopped up to equal the scores and Rob Sutton gained a win in a tricky major piece ending..

Match reported by Ray Collett. Roger Yates, Paws captain, had been expecting a poor result with two regular players absent. he needn't have worried. John Hesketh gradually improved his position and won in style. Steve Nicholls had a topsy turvy game with Frank Cassidy but drew in the end. Board 1 saw and interesting Kings Indian Defence. In the early middle game black had a slight advantage, but after simplification black's pawn advantage was balanced against great white piece activity and players agreed a draw in a complex and equal double rook and minor piece ending.

Match reported by Arnold Kirkland and Michele Clack. Board 2 players agreed an early draw when it became apparent that a series of exchanges looked more or less forced. Harry Sargent, in his first season, played well on board 4 against David Cleak in spite of losing. Players had level material going into the endgame. Unfortunately Harry miscalculated and lost a passed pawn and eventually the game. Giles Stanton on board 2, tried to keep the queens on, but Arnold Kirkland eventually forced them off. At this point Giles's two-pawn deficit was terminal. The board 3 game was very interesting. David Smith coolly swapped a bishop for 3 pawns even though most pieces were still on. He calculated well and it came down to a 5 pawn v 2 pawn plus bishop endgame. At this point he used his king well to force a pawn through.
